I Wonder Why?

3/2/2022

Comments

I wonder why?

Why is it called the periodic table? Have you wondered? I asked a bunch of 9-year-olds who had been introduced to the periodic table recently. Hands went up enthusiastically in the air.

D: Ma'm I think it is because of the time period
S: Yes, like when they were found
Me: You mean like the timeline?
D: Yes, yes, like that
Me: That is an interesting hypothesis of why it is called the 'periodic table'. Anyone else?
I: I think it is because the elements are arranged in the order of their weight
Me: That is partly right. However, they could have called it the 'weight table' or the 'element line' like the number line right? Why is it called 'periodic'?

Since classes are online one of them, P (googles the answer and starts reading it out)

Me: P, I know there is an explanation of what is a periodic table is on Google. If you can read and tell me why that makes it periodic I'd like to hear that (she nods). Okay, anyone else?
S: Maybe, they are arranged by their use?
Me: Then it could be called the 'use table' or 'benefits table' why is it called 'periodic'?
(they are all silent and thinking)
Me: Think of the word periodic in the context of a swing or pendulum. What happens?
S: It goes back and forth
D: Again and again
Me: Yes. Ishaan was partly right, the elements were arranged in the order of weight but they realized that after every eight elements the properties seem to repeat and the group of elements seem to be more like each other than other sets. This seemed to be a periodic pattern across and hence, it is called Periodic Table. This way learning about each group gives you a lot of information about the similarities and differences between the same and other groups.

The 'why' of 'what' children are learning is important to them. Not just for a deep understanding of the topic but also to figure out ways to master the content. They learn to establish connections to remember the reason behind what they are learning as well as, in this context, how scientists thought about problems that were beyond them and what led to the discovery of knowledge that we hold so fundamental in today's understanding of science.

Ingredients For A Conversation Filled With Curiosities!

25/11/2021

Comments

A moment of wonder from one of our Mission Classes (SM Plates - where we discuss the mindsets with regards to food, what goes into the food that we consume, etc.),

Chirag (8 Y/O), "Is rice junk food?"
Ryan (6 Y/O) immediately responds, "They polish rice. When it is polished, it becomes like that, we can't eat it. It is not good. But if we grow it and eat, it will be healthy!"

A moment of awe, healthy exchange of information, deep thinking...marking the perfect ingredients for a conversation filled with curiosities and joy!

Let's invite more wonder in together!

Oh! The Places We Go, an Annual Day Showcase 2020 - 2021

22/5/2021

Comments

This year's annual day was extra special to us. As we like to say at SM, "No virus can stop us!", no virus did stop us from learning and growing this year.

Our 1st, 2nd and 3rd graders came together to express themselves in a different way this year, a special way where both them and we facilitators journeyed along many different paths through our minds. Yes, you heard it right- our minds.

Now, here is Ms. Poorva Agarwal giving you a brief about the process. So here we go.
Our 1st, 2nd and 3rd graders were introduced to Dr. Seuss' book, 'Oh, The Places You'll Go', and they went along the character on his  journey through his mindspace. They, individually and as a class explored this together and reconstructed their mindspaces in the form of a narrative poem in classic Dr. Seuss style.

The videos you're about to watch are rendered using children's illustrations and their voice.

Watch out for some amazing twists in the story and some cool illustrations as well as voice acting.
Sit back and enjoy the show.
Which all places did you go to in your mindspace watching these videos? Do let us know in the comments.

Our school parents came together to watch children's work on the 22nd of May. Out of all of the heartfelt responses they shared post-watching the final videos of their children's versions of Dr Seuss' 'Oh, The Places You'll Go' poem, we handpicked a few of them, which you are about to watch.

Did we just get inspired by a story about starfishes? Yes, yes we did!

17/6/2020

Being a change maker

Our theme for this new academic year is 'Being Change Makers' and all of us facilitators are busy setting up for the year, making notes, brainstorming stories, finding connections, connecting with the children. To keep all of us inspired, we, the team, decided to take turns and do an activity everyday morning together. As we did a lot of games in the entirety of last week, we decided to read an article and reflect for our morning inspiration today.

The article was about a lot of starfishes that a little boy was throwing back into the ocean when an older adult walks over and asks him why he was doing that, as it didn't make much of a big difference. The boy then picks another one and says, "It makes a difference to this one", and throws it, out of the millions, back into the ocean.

After taking turns to read out loud, we all quietly sat, reflecting, wondering about the story and relating it back to our previous discussion on 'Being Change Makers' (what being a changemaker means, how we are already change makers, and why we need to be change makers) an overwhelming amount of inspiration took over. These are some of the things each of our facilitators said,

"I feel I am also doing my bit as a change maker. Whatever small thing I am doing is contributing to change. I considered it small or insignificant until now. But now that also makes a difference and I am contributing it in my own way- whatever I do at home- reject water not wasted, fixing leaking pipes, waste segregation etc. I ensure all my family members are also aware of it, and practice it. . Now that I am aware of the value of my contribution,  I feel good about it and want to spread the message to those close to me."- Jennifer

""It made a difference to that starfish", he emphasized on value, the magnitude does not determine value. We find excuses that let us be ignorant. As humans, our natural instincts work best when we are faced with a stimuli that has a direct effect in us, which explains our slow response to climate change and fast response to a pandemic.
The boy wasn't looking for attention, he didn't see himself as a hero. He had just one intention, saving a starfish's life, so it didn't matter to him how many he saved or if he was the only one. He had a clear purpose.
" - Tasha

"I always thought about environment from a very young age. Nature has its own way to bring all natural things into use. Being part of SM, part of an organization into change making., everyone's opinion matters. That's a door to change. Because I knew my voice will be heard, I proposed my opinion and it was applied. I'd proposed to remove the trash bags to reduce plastic and now, on a regular basis, at least 3 trash bags we have changed- as an organization, I am a part of change making. I always go to a shop with a cloth bag. I even educated my maid on burning plastic with wood - that isn't good for health, so educated her about how it affects health, she looped back to me saying how it has stopped.
"There are people throwing so much. Will I  make a difference?" Yes!
"- Neha

"I love the environment and I can't do anything consciously that will hurt the environment or the beings living in this environment. When I was in University, I used to use more organic products, use less plastic, and such. Slowly, I started to not do it as much thinking my contribution is not going to help, and those around me used to discourage me. Post our discussion on being change makers, I am a lot more aware of my thinking along the lines of the passion towards the environment and how my contribution, even if it is little, matters- like closing the tap, fixing leaks, and such. I know it's just one person but I don’t ever want to back down on what I believe in, which is my love for this planet and the beings living in it. It is my home, our home and I want to do what I can, no matter how little, to take care of it." - Sruthy

""Change starts with us", and also if everyone could think like the boy rather than the man... Collectively we could have saved the star fishes. Starfish is a "metaphor" for so many things that requires change. I can equate it to corona too...if one person follows social distancing well and seeing that another person too supports and practices the same and so on and so forth we could have brought it down and eventually have it not affect us for this long. This story helps me see how we can make a difference in the bigger scheme of things and we need to become these change makers in the world to truly bring about shifts in things we think need to change to better the world we live in, not only for us but for the sustainability of all kinds of living beings on this planet for generations to come." - Kruthika

"Most of the time when people want to do things, they don't get the right kind of motivation and they end up not trying anything new. The right kind of motivation and inspiration, or sometimes nothing said in response also help people to move forward. For me, trying new things is important and when the progress I see on it, however little, is satisfying. And that is my first step towards success." - Sheela

The said article started with a quote, "A single, ordinary person still can make a difference- and single, ordinary people are doing precisely that every day." - Chris Bohjalian, Vermot- based author and speaker.

So now to our readers,
What comes to your mind when you hear  'changemaker'?
And moreover, do you think you can be a changemaker?
Do you know what change you want to make, that one (or many) cause(s) you are passionate about and feel it burning deep within you?

What contribution did you make today?

Make music with no instruments?! No problem!

24/1/2020

Comments

The Pups and Calves were given a challenge in the morning for their morning ITP (Invitation To Play) where they were asked to create music. The twist was, they needed to make music with no musical instruments.
The reaction was priceless - excitement, curiosity, eyes sparking up with wonder, confusion, lost...
F: Go ahead and make music! You can do it!
Picture
Picture
Suddenly they were everywhere. The facilitator wasn't prepared for their reaction. Some started clapping, some were trying to whistle, some banged the tables, walls, tables, some stomped, some made sounds with their mouths, some banged on beds, some took chairs and banged against the wall...needless to say there was a plethora of sounds that arrived as part of their experimentation. Some wanted to sing, so they did.

Picture
Picture
Suddenly T says, "Let the girls sing and boys make music!"
And that was what happened. With a little help from the facilitator, girls got together and sang our school's anthem while boys clapped, stomped, whistled, etc. And vice versa.
All in all, children had a gala of a time making music today with absolutely no instruments!

Who said we need instruments to make music? As long as we have our imagination, we can achieve anything!

5-year olds learn to collaborate

19/11/2019

Comments

The facilitator at SM preschool noticed that the class of 12 four to five year olds were establishing comfort zones and forming smaller groups within the class. They played with the same group of children and struggled with making new friends. To address this issue, on one of the morning hours, the facilitator set up an invitation to play with lego blocks and animal toys.

Children were given the choice to create something together as one team and were given 15 minutes. Even though children began to create something together, towards the end of 15 minutes there were two smaller groups and few children playing individually on their own.

Picture
Picture
At the end of 15 minutes, children were asked to stop, leave whatever they were doing as it is and move to the side. Each of them were asked what their team was doing but they could only recollect and say what they were doing individually.

The facilitator reminded them of the initial goal of the activity and posed a question at the children, "What do you all think we can do now?"
"Maybe we can join everything together", T suggested and everybody agreed.

The children were given another 15 minutes to complete their task. At the end of that 15 minutes and a lot of mini conflicts, they had together built a gigantic animal carrier.

Picture
Picture
When asked what they liked and disliked about working together as a team, the few things that emerged were:

Sh: We made so many different things and we attached it, I didn’t like it when J destroyed it.
T: I learn’t to do a big building with so many blocks with the team, I didn’t like when Ar destroyed what I made.
Ad: I liked to put the animals together with the team, I didn’t like J destroying it.
Ar: My team helped me make the big building, I didn’t like that there are a lot of items that are not used. I felt very bad when my team was not listening, only V was listening.
An: I learn’t how to build animal home with the team. I didn’t like everybody screaming and I was not able to hear others. Everyone was very loud screaming “I want to put it”.
Av: I liked building the animal carrier truck. I didn’t like that everyone was shouting.
Ad: I like about my team when they were doing a great building work.

So it is with anytime children work together, there is bound to be conflict, lack of feeling listened to, screaming and a lot of me-me-me. Even if at the end of it what they produce looks amazing the feeling of how the experience was stays with them and they continue to avoid collaboration.

As children listened to how they all felt at the end of the activity it started to create bridges between one heart to another and slowly mend fences from one child to another. At the heart of good team work and collaboration lies trust and at the heart of that lies empathy and listening with an open, non-judgmental mind is a good start!

Collaboration and team work are two of the most essential life skills. By learning to make new friends and collaborating with them at an early age, children become more tolerant and appreciative of others' ideas and develop a sense of social adeptness which they are going to carry with them through adulthood.

Why should we move our body? 4 yr olds explain…

27/9/2019

Comments

Children came running into the class after playing a very fun game of ‘Aim and hit’ using balloons. While the 2-3 year olds had used bats to hit the balloons, the 3-4 year olds had a challenge at hand – to hit the balloons using only their hands and not letting it touch the ground. They all seemed to love the game; screaming, running and chasing their balloons, trying to keep them afloat!
Picture
Later, when they gathered for circle time, the facilitator asked the children ‘Is it important for us to move our body and play?’ All of them agreed in unison, ‘Yeeees!’ However, there was one voice that said ‘No!’.
F : Oh! N says it is not important for us to move our body.
V (looking at N) : No, it is good.
Av :  It is good only!
F : Why is it good?
V : Because it make us healthy..and and strong.
F : Yes! And how do you think our body feels when we move it?
Ad &V :Haaaappy!
F : What do you think N? Should we move our body to stay healthy?
N : Yes!

This small conversation is an example of how children as young as 3 year olds are capable of peer intervention! When children understand the why, what and how of their learning, it gets deeply imbued in their minds and shapes their values and views of the world.

The Thinking Corner

18/10/2011

Comments

We have had a lot of parents talk to us about continuous application of thinking skills and also giving them an opportunity to work with their children on thinking tools independent of our programs. So, we have come up with the concept of 'thinking corner' where parents and children or children by themselves can explore the various thinking tools. Keep tuned to the website, as we announce further details about thinking corner series...

Currently, we have launched the thinking corner creative game with several Just Books centers in Bangalore. Whether you are a member or not, you can go to the Just Books closest to you, pay a nominal fee and register for the Thinking Corner Game for the next one month! Every week, you will get two fresh creative activities to work on and what's more you can work on it as a family or as an individual and submit it at Just Books branch and/or email it to us and you are in the running not only for the 'creative prize' but also would have burned off some non-creative fat to score on some creative muscles!!!

So, what are you waiting for - sign up here and get your right brain rocking!!!
