An environment is a living, changing system. More than the physical space, it includes the way time is strucutured and the roles we are expected to play. It conditions how we feel, think, and behave; and it dramatically affects the quality of our lives. The environment either works for us or against us as we conduct our lives.
- Jim Greenman

Space is an indispensable component in the Reggio Emilia approach towards education. The space or the environment is considered to be the third teacher after parents and facilitators according to the philosophy. Being a Reggio inspired school, space set up is an integral part of our curriculum planning and every element of space is thought through and placed with an intention to enable communication between children, with adults in the system and with the space itself.

This year as we plan to embarked on another exciting academic journey, we decided to redesign our space by bringing our unique Sparkling Mindz characters to invite children to be part of their inspiring stories of exploration and wonder. We used the glass sliding doors in each classroom as portals to the world of interaction, exploration, imagination and movement.

Each door holds a scene from the stories of Cloudsy, Braiynee Bee, Flexi Daisy, Treeous, Q.marq, Randall and Animo's adventurous lives painted carefully with an objective to spark thinking and discussions as we eagerly await children to return to school post their summer vacations.

We 'Thought With Our Hands!'

"Ideas are a dime a dozen. People who implement them are priceless."

This old adage by Mary Kay Ash is timeless - and rings true especially today when the notions 'Entrepreneurship' and 'Innovation' are receiving wider acceptance and desire.

At Sparkling Mindz, where children work on Changemaker Missions, we constantly ask ourselves 'what does it take to implement an idea'.
In one such exploration, we decided to visit @theworkshop_blr , in order to experience first-hand the process of converting ideas into something tangible.

We are all grateful for the wonderful experience that we had to share that space with them, bring out our creative spirits, let go and play with materials, think with our hands and expand our horizons.

A key part of the experience was understanding the tools and how they are to be leveraged in the creation process, especially with respect to woodworking.

"Which is the right tool to use to remove a nail from the wall? When is the right time to use a circular saw versus a jigsaw saw? When do we use plywood instead of original wood to create something and why? What are a few of the safety mechanisms to be mindful of when using tools?"

Once these questions were explored in detail, we got the opportunity to work in teams, design products and finally - use the tools and materials to really bring these ideas to life!

Thank you @theworkshop_blr for providing such a space and thank you to the entire team for letting go of inhibitions and 'thinking with your hands'.

Every Step Counts

Start small, stay steady, collaborate and grow!

Our Climate Change Mission Group met with an expert today - Mrs Madhuri, creator of Indulge (homemade baked granola bars) and gardening enthusiast -  at school who showed them how the smallest of efforts from each one of us could create an impact.

How?
They attended a workshop and learnt that while global warming and climate change is a global problem, it is each of ours to acknowledge and solve.

Sounds way too big to solve, doesn't it? Somestimes seeing  the small steps don't seem to sovle anything. But every step and action from each one of us counts.

So our 1st to 8th graders took that 1st step and learnt about bio-enzymes, micro-greens, making completely organic and biodegradable floor cleaners!

And we all realized, "Wow! It isn't a hassle at all. All we need is a little know-how, some discipline, and consistent effort that can get us started and help sustain!"

They smelled, touched, felt, and also made these bio enzymes and planted for micro-greens.

It was an experience for them to see that we can do something to make a difference, no matter how small.

What next?
We will continue to take this forward in the form of actually making and using them at our school and at our homes too.

I Wonder Why?

3/2/2022

Comments

I wonder why?

Why is it called the periodic table? Have you wondered? I asked a bunch of 9-year-olds who had been introduced to the periodic table recently. Hands went up enthusiastically in the air.

D: Ma'm I think it is because of the time period
S: Yes, like when they were found
Me: You mean like the timeline?
D: Yes, yes, like that
Me: That is an interesting hypothesis of why it is called the 'periodic table'. Anyone else?
I: I think it is because the elements are arranged in the order of their weight
Me: That is partly right. However, they could have called it the 'weight table' or the 'element line' like the number line right? Why is it called 'periodic'?

Since classes are online one of them, P (googles the answer and starts reading it out)

Me: P, I know there is an explanation of what is a periodic table is on Google. If you can read and tell me why that makes it periodic I'd like to hear that (she nods). Okay, anyone else?
S: Maybe, they are arranged by their use?
Me: Then it could be called the 'use table' or 'benefits table' why is it called 'periodic'?
(they are all silent and thinking)
Me: Think of the word periodic in the context of a swing or pendulum. What happens?
S: It goes back and forth
D: Again and again
Me: Yes. Ishaan was partly right, the elements were arranged in the order of weight but they realized that after every eight elements the properties seem to repeat and the group of elements seem to be more like each other than other sets. This seemed to be a periodic pattern across and hence, it is called Periodic Table. This way learning about each group gives you a lot of information about the similarities and differences between the same and other groups.

The 'why' of 'what' children are learning is important to them. Not just for a deep understanding of the topic but also to figure out ways to master the content. They learn to establish connections to remember the reason behind what they are learning as well as, in this context, how scientists thought about problems that were beyond them and what led to the discovery of knowledge that we hold so fundamental in today's understanding of science.

The 100 Languages of Our Preschool Children!

27/1/2022

"The child is made of one hundred" - Loris Malaguzzi

This Children's Day our preschool children explored their 100.

What does this 100 stand for? And what are these 100 that children are made of? What does it exactly mean?

When we asked children what they thought about it, this is what they shared,

"All our hands together make hundred hands"
"We have hundred brains, million words and powers"
"Hundred thoughts and infinite powers"
"Hundred ways of playing with cars"

Children understood that the '100' are not literal things but a representation of the variety within them, and the diversity of their potential.

We then set out on a journey together to explore further how these hundred ways of thinking, expressing, and wondering translated in our classes.

Take a look and journey along with us.

Parenting As A Skill Workshop

2/12/2021

Is parenting a skill or an identity?

Most of the times parents get stuck in their ways of parenting seeing it as a fixed, unchanging identity.

Where do our models of parenting come from?
How do we look at parenting differently for each of our children (when we have more than one)?
Do solutions that worked for others work for me? There seems to be so much advice around. I'm confused.
To or not to do rewards and punishments?
What happens when my child refuses, rebels, and back answers?
What happens when they make bad choices?

With a million more thoughts and feelings a few of our parents embarked on a very different kind of workshop this season - Parenting as a Skill.

Every generation of parents and caregivers takes on the work of loving and nurturing every generation to come and the most important contribution we can make to that generation is by becoming more self-aware, empathetic, growth-oriented, and pursuing deep and meaningful connections over immediate gratification of our authority.

This weekend a few from our parent community came together with a common goal to embark on this journey willingly and joyously.

Ingredients For A Conversation Filled With Curiosities!

25/11/2021

A moment of wonder from one of our Mission Classes (SM Plates - where we discuss the mindsets with regards to food, what goes into the food that we consume, etc.),

Chirag (8 Y/O), "Is rice junk food?"
Ryan (6 Y/O) immediately responds, "They polish rice. When it is polished, it becomes like that, we can't eat it. It is not good. But if we grow it and eat, it will be healthy!"

A moment of awe, healthy exchange of information, deep thinking...marking the perfect ingredients for a conversation filled with curiosities and joy!

Let's invite more wonder in together!

Becoming Changemakers - Step 1

2/8/2021

Comments

Have you ever wondered how we can save the world from becoming a garbage pile?
Do you think there's something we can do about it? Any ideas?
If so, how can you implement them? How can these ideas produce an output?

Well...that is what project T.R.U.I is for!

WHAT IS PROJECT T.R.U.I, you ask?
As sparkling Mindzians, we were troubled to know that the waste, whether we separate or not as dry and wet waste, usually end up in the landfills and all that talk about companies recycling are usually fake. Now knowing that the waste produced in our school will end up in landfills any way, we wanted to do something about it. And that was how the concept of T.R.U.I. emerged -Tinker, Reduce, Recycle, Reuse, Up-cycle and Innovate. A project that will help us to not only T.R.U.I. our waste but also even probably sell it.

SO, WHAT DO WE PLAN TO DO ABOUT IT?
After the tool T.R.U.I. was given to us, we wanted to start the work right away, and so we did. As a class, we sat together and brought different ideas to the table. From coasters to lampshades, sound amplifiers to keychains, pencil holders to racks, our ideas were limitless. We then needed to pick a few from that big pile of ideas. To do this, we came up with a set of parameters that will give us an idea of how 'good' the idea is, what the product will and can be. The parameters we came up with were: effective, useful, abundantly sourceable, sturdy, and aesthetically pleasing. This came in handy as it helped us pick the most matched ideas from the lot.

LET'S DELVE INTO OUR DISCUSSIONS FROM T.R.U.I. EMERGED FROM
Our discussions started off with the big question, 'Where does our waste go?' We wondered about it for days and days. We enquired about it to many - our maintenance heads, the people who take the garbage and many others. Even after all that the answers were either “It goes to Bannerghatta.”, or “Why do you want to know?!” None of us were satisfied with any of the answers that we received. So many of these discussions and so many questions later, we finally arrived at T.R.U.I and the ideas started pouring in.

MISSION T.R.U.I
Now that T.R.U.I has stepped in and taken a very important role in all of our lives, we were ready to start making the items we came up with. But the facilitators helped us realize that there were more learning and skill set we needed to bring to the table to make this process easier. This created the mission T.R.U.I where all our learnings were connected to T.R.U.I., along with us learning the skills that will help us to create T.R.U.I. Ied items.

Child is Not Just a Roll Number

1/8/2021

Comments

I heard a parent in one of our Parenting as a Skill Workshops say, "My child at Sparkling Mindz is not just a roll number".

The moment that I captured there seemed to have awakened something within me and took me to remembering the days when I was perhaps just another number in my class all through the years of my school and college years.

This led me to wonder, does our education system look at children as just another roll number, another head to count in the attendance register? Or another business number?

I wondered some more. What about each child? What about their capabilities, curiosities, imagination, wonder, sense of belonging, identities? Are we raising children for them to be chiseled according to someone else's dreams/choices/perspectives? What about the individuality? The choices that they can make? Or truly hearing each of them out- their voice?

Picture
The more I wondered, the more suffocated I felt, like being wrapped up in a plastic bag.

Now imagine our children being wrapped in plastic bags until their formal education is complete. There then comes expectations higher than one's self of them ripping those bags open and flying high...expecting them to be independent, think for themselves, and be creative!

How would the child cope as an adult - having lived through someone else's realities and expectations? Where are they to develop the essential skills to live their lives from? A space where children are to be cherished, loved, nurtured and taught essential skills to manage themselves in every way, I asked myself, are we failing as a society? Is it not time for a change? A revolution, perhaps?

We at Sparkling Mindz believe that it is!

A Melody of Colors in a Medley of Droplets!

17/7/2021

Comments

When we think about painting with liquid paint, our thoughts normally go into paint brush, water, a palette with colors we need to create what we are about to paint.

Now let's imagine this,  we are given lots of paint but no paint brush? Along with it, a big white canvas. And we are told, "Paint whatever you want!"

What will we do?

A similar situation happened at our Cubs' class today.
Our 4 to 5 year olds were invited to paint today with a twist: dip only the palms and SPLASH!!!!!

And the result? A melody of droplets in a medley of colours (below).
Picture

ITP (Invitation To Play) at SM is the first few minutes of the beginning of their day where children are invited to simply let go and play!

From giving a specific set of materials to lots of different kinds of materials, to sometimes no materials, children are given the space to explore from ranges of semi- to unstructured play.

ITP, for facilitators, is also the time when they get to see so much more about their children than what they can see such as, how do they work together, how independently can someone play, what all happens in their imagination, what emotion are they carrying, and so much more.

Play being an important component in the development of young children (especially), in Reggio Emilia learning philosophy itself, the value of play is immeasurable indeed and ITPs are a space of celebration here at Sparkling Mindz!

On this particular day, this first 15 minutes of the starting of their day not only uplifted their spirits, bringing in joy, love, excitement, wonder, and more, but also developing a sense of camaraderie and collaboration between each other too, as there were just 5 bowls full of paint, and 12 children.
And in this particular Cubs' classroom today, there were lots of laughter, wonder, awe, 'what else can I create', 'what does this look like', to a loooooooot more of 'Oh WOW, look at these colors!'

And merrily they went looking forward to begin day in unison, to learn and grow together.

Is play only for children though? When was the last time you simply...played? Do let us know in the comments below.
