Imagination Unfolding!

15/9/2022

Comments

“I put some thoughts in my head,
I take a cloth in my hand,
spread, wrap,
Spread, wrap,
Shake it all about,
I get new ideas, I get more ideas,
And that’s what is all about”

This our preschool song sang to the tune of Hokey pokey.
One sunny morning, our preschoolers between the age of 4 - 5 years old, were invited with the above song to the lawn laid with colourful dupattas. Looking at which their imagination train took off and here's what followed.

Ar got deeply involved in attempting to wrap the dupatta around his neck trying to imitate tying a scarf.
Ana joyfully laid the white cloth on the grass, and called it a picnic mat, and with a blink of an eye she shouted "Who wants a ride", as she started to pull along the two edges of the cloth. One of them sat and Ana pulled along. Not very far she changed her mind and transformed herself to a vampire as she seeked help from me to tie the white cloth around her neck.
In the background, Li was rotating himself in circles, when asked, he said "I am making the smoke go, I am exhaust fan".

Picture

HOOH…HOOH... came the sounds, Yu and Ru are being the ghost. While talking to me, Yu changed his mind and is a chef now offering some healthy lollipops made up of mutton and rice.
I then walked to Ar who is no longer wearing a scarf, and is busy trying to get off the dupatta which is stuck on the wall high up. When asked what happened, he explained that spinning the dupatta and throwing it upwards resulted in this.

Aa walks up to me and says I am wearing "Siree" (kannada word for Saree) and gets busy covering her head. Looking at this one of the Calves (3-4 years old) passing by picks a dupatta and says that she wants to wear a saree too:)
I approached Ru who is making sounds like a whirring engine, when asked he said he is the driver for the helicopter. This thought became a collaborative play as the others started to be the passengers and made place for themselves by arranging chairs.

This is a glimpse of how our Cubs imagination unfolded into different shades, reflecting what's on their mind.

At Sparkling Mindz, imagination is an integral part of a child's learning, we believe that by providing space for their imagination to grow enables children to see things in newer ways, aiding them to see various perspectives and becoming better innovators and problem solvers. Along with it creating a space for children to authentically express themselves.

What are your thoughts on it? How would you like to tickle your imagination muscle today?

Every Step Counts

Start small, stay steady, collaborate and grow!

Our Climate Change Mission Group met with an expert today - Mrs Madhuri, creator of Indulge (homemade baked granola bars) and gardening enthusiast -  at school who showed them how the smallest of efforts from each one of us could create an impact.

How?
They attended a workshop and learnt that while global warming and climate change is a global problem, it is each of ours to acknowledge and solve.

Sounds way too big to solve, doesn't it? Somestimes seeing  the small steps don't seem to sovle anything. But every step and action from each one of us counts.

So our 1st to 8th graders took that 1st step and learnt about bio-enzymes, micro-greens, making completely organic and biodegradable floor cleaners!

And we all realized, "Wow! It isn't a hassle at all. All we need is a little know-how, some discipline, and consistent effort that can get us started and help sustain!"

They smelled, touched, felt, and also made these bio enzymes and planted for micro-greens.

It was an experience for them to see that we can do something to make a difference, no matter how small.

What next?
We will continue to take this forward in the form of actually making and using them at our school and at our homes too.

Becoming Changemakers - Step 1

2/8/2021

Comments

Have you ever wondered how we can save the world from becoming a garbage pile?
Do you think there's something we can do about it? Any ideas?
If so, how can you implement them? How can these ideas produce an output?

Well...that is what project T.R.U.I is for!

WHAT IS PROJECT T.R.U.I, you ask?
As sparkling Mindzians, we were troubled to know that the waste, whether we separate or not as dry and wet waste, usually end up in the landfills and all that talk about companies recycling are usually fake. Now knowing that the waste produced in our school will end up in landfills any way, we wanted to do something about it. And that was how the concept of T.R.U.I. emerged -Tinker, Reduce, Recycle, Reuse, Up-cycle and Innovate. A project that will help us to not only T.R.U.I. our waste but also even probably sell it.

SO, WHAT DO WE PLAN TO DO ABOUT IT?
After the tool T.R.U.I. was given to us, we wanted to start the work right away, and so we did. As a class, we sat together and brought different ideas to the table. From coasters to lampshades, sound amplifiers to keychains, pencil holders to racks, our ideas were limitless. We then needed to pick a few from that big pile of ideas. To do this, we came up with a set of parameters that will give us an idea of how 'good' the idea is, what the product will and can be. The parameters we came up with were: effective, useful, abundantly sourceable, sturdy, and aesthetically pleasing. This came in handy as it helped us pick the most matched ideas from the lot.

LET'S DELVE INTO OUR DISCUSSIONS FROM T.R.U.I. EMERGED FROM
Our discussions started off with the big question, 'Where does our waste go?' We wondered about it for days and days. We enquired about it to many - our maintenance heads, the people who take the garbage and many others. Even after all that the answers were either “It goes to Bannerghatta.”, or “Why do you want to know?!” None of us were satisfied with any of the answers that we received. So many of these discussions and so many questions later, we finally arrived at T.R.U.I and the ideas started pouring in.

MISSION T.R.U.I
Now that T.R.U.I has stepped in and taken a very important role in all of our lives, we were ready to start making the items we came up with. But the facilitators helped us realize that there were more learning and skill set we needed to bring to the table to make this process easier. This created the mission T.R.U.I where all our learnings were connected to T.R.U.I., along with us learning the skills that will help us to create T.R.U.I. Ied items.

Oh! The Places We Go, an Annual Day Showcase 2020 - 2021

22/5/2021

Comments

This year's annual day was extra special to us. As we like to say at SM, "No virus can stop us!", no virus did stop us from learning and growing this year.

Our 1st, 2nd and 3rd graders came together to express themselves in a different way this year, a special way where both them and we facilitators journeyed along many different paths through our minds. Yes, you heard it right- our minds.

Now, here is Ms. Poorva Agarwal giving you a brief about the process. So here we go.
Our 1st, 2nd and 3rd graders were introduced to Dr. Seuss' book, 'Oh, The Places You'll Go', and they went along the character on his  journey through his mindspace. They, individually and as a class explored this together and reconstructed their mindspaces in the form of a narrative poem in classic Dr. Seuss style.

The videos you're about to watch are rendered using children's illustrations and their voice.

Watch out for some amazing twists in the story and some cool illustrations as well as voice acting.
Sit back and enjoy the show.
Which all places did you go to in your mindspace watching these videos? Do let us know in the comments.

Our school parents came together to watch children's work on the 22nd of May. Out of all of the heartfelt responses they shared post-watching the final videos of their children's versions of Dr Seuss' 'Oh, The Places You'll Go' poem, we handpicked a few of them, which you are about to watch.

How do we sing our Welcome Song while we are about to wind up???

6/2/2021

Comments

While discussing on the take homes (homework) from the weekend, Aaditya, our 5 year old Joey, raises his hand and says in a rush, "Maaammm, we forgot to do welcome song!!", and puts both his palms cupping the both sides of his temples.

Welcome Song is sung usually in the morning when we all come together where we wish each other good morning, welcome each other, and overall bring the energy of the group up! Today, as we all got into a mood of wanting to share with each other the take homes from the weekend, we got carried away.

"Oh no! What do we do? It's almost time to wind up for us today...How do we sing a welcome song now?", they were asked by their facilitator.

With this question came a bunch of surprised, curious and funny expressions.

Children then started to wonder about how to sing a welcome and wind up song together, which sparked their curiosity and they started to come up with their own various versions of a song we called 'Welcome-Wind Up Song'. As it was time for our wind up for the day, they were left to think more about it as their take home that day. The below video was the result, as they were left to think about it as their take home.
"What is in a song?", after all that's just entertainment right? Also, why should we worry about a child wanting or reminding about a song that was missed? At SM, for us every single thing that children explore has learning in it.

"Children have a 100 languages to learn from and learn with and we intend to keep it that way. " - Sreeja Iyer, CEO, Sparkling Mindz Global

Each of them will take this richness of learning as an experience away with them into their lives as they grow, learning just the alphabet or numbers without the purpose, the songs, the stories, the clay, the mud, the sunshine is moot! If there was ever a time to create changemakers, it is today and if there was ever to create changemakers that care let's start with caring about the whole being that they are so they can then shine that light to others and their world too.

We Created Our Own Forests!

1/12/2020

Comments

Picture

Our 5 and 6 year olds have been going on a learning journey with one of the characters of SM, called Treeous, who is a traveling tree who loves adventures. One day, during one of his vacation days, he travels to a forest here in South India and gets lost while awaiting his friend who promised to meet him there. Children, journeying with Treeous in the forest, went through their imagination of the different kinds of forests they were in, and created them at home.

Owning and personalizing learning goes beyond class hours. From the limited number of hours with their school mates and facilitators, children take their interests, curiosities and exploration to their lives around them, making their learning deep, wide and connected. After all, imagination knows no bounds indeed!

Song Creators - How things fly?

12/11/2020

Comments

The pre-schoolers (3 to 4 year old) showed a lot of curiosity with regards to flying objects during our discussions on what magic is according to them while reading the book 'Witchety Sticks and The Magic Buttons'. This progressed to them seeing a video of things that fly (which emerged from their discussion on what are some of the magical things they see around and why they are magical) and what they came up with post that is nothing short of magical.
When asked about what they think are flying things, a wide variety of answers came in as responses from the children:

Aa: Aeroplane
S: Butterfly
Aa: Jet
Ab: Eagle
K: Those triangle things that guys take and fly. When there is wind they can fly (kite)
An: Dragonfly and bees
S: Helicopter, aeroplane
H: Parrot
Aa: Jet packs can fly when we wear and we press the button
S: Chicken, hen
F: Can they fly?
S: They have wings
F: So does everything with wings fly?
Collectively: Yes.

Post this they moved onto watching the video of birds, balloons, kites, helicopter, aeroplane, etc. flying and we had a discussion on they each flew. They explained about how each of them fly,

K: Ma'am, I can see one bird and one baby bird. Balloons can also fly
F: But balloons don't have wings. So how do they fly?
H: With the air
H: When the wind, when somebody leave hands, they go up.
K: It can be popped like this <claps his hands together> pop!

Then came a kite,

F: How does a kite fly?
H, K: Air , Wind

Then a bird and a helicopter,
K: Eagle! It has wings like this <pretending to fly>
F: Next. What's this?
Collectively: Helicopter!
F: How does this helicopter fly?
K:With its wings
S: Propeller goes tugh tugh tugh
An: Helicopter go like this (up and down motion)
K: I have a drone in my house. Makes sound and hand movements

Out came an…..?K: Aeroplane!!!
F: How does an aeroplane fly?
An: Wings!
K: I know how to make the aeroplane with my hands
S: This aeroplane looks like it has wheels on the wings
F: That's an interesting observation. Why do they have wheels on the wings?
An: To land. When they are going up and come up, they need wheels to come down.
F: What about a helicopter? Does it have wheels?
K: No.
F: Then how does it land?
An: It jumps down
Ab: It'll go down

Sees a spaceshuttle flying

S: Rocket! Only space shuttles can go outerspace. Only spaceshuttle have fire

The conversations went on and on about various things that fly. Since children were fond of singing 'Fly Fly Fly The Butterfly' nursery rhyme, we thought it would be a great idea to get them all together and create extensions to it to sing about some of their favourite things that flew other than the butterflies.

Here is the result:

F: So let's make a song now. What all things fly?
H: Balloon
Aa: Jet pack, rubber band
S: Rocket
K: Space Shuttle
An: Ribbon
L: Bird, aeroplane
S: Helicopter

Picture
Song:
Tune of 'Fly Fly Fly the Butterfly'

Fly fly fly the balloon fly
Up in the sky it's flying high
We try to catch it but it's too high
Fly fly fly the balloon fly

Fly fly fly the jet pack fly
I am going to fly very high
Then I land to the station
Fly fly fly the jet pack fly

Fly fly fly the rocket fly
In the night to the space it flies
Then it flies and lands on the moon
Fly fly fly the rocket fly.

Fly fly fly the ribbon fly
In the meadow it's flying high
With different colours it flies to the sun
Fly fly fly the ribbon fly

Fly fly fly the birdie fly
Up in the sky it's flying high
Quick quick quick it's sitting in the nest
Fly fly fly the birdie fly
 * quick being the sound it makes when it sits in the nest.

Fly fly fly the aeroplane
Up in the sky it flies so fast
All the around the world it's flying high
Fly fly fly the aeroplane fly.

Fly fly fly the helicopter fly
Up propeller and back propeller
Turn turn turn turns really fast
Fly fly fly the helicopter fly

Fly fly fly the rubber band fly
We pull it and leave it
It fly so high and lands on the ground
Then we pick it up and throw it up again!

It's our Sports Day!

5/10/2020

Comments

"Hurray! It's our Sports Day!", screamed the children and facilitators alike. To us at SM, sports day is a celebration.

Celebrate what, you may ask? Well, we want to celebrate our growth, our togetherness, our hard work with respect to the trainings, learnings, pushing ourselves beyond our usual 'workout' days.

And this year, the preschoolers of SM were introduced to a new team game. They took it with open arms, learning about what it's like to work with a team, be part of a team, resilience, focus, etc. They learned so much in the field…what more? They learned to take all this learning back to their classes too.

Sports is not a goal or the finish line for us at SM, but an integral part of the classroom too, and this begins with our wide and deep disconnections on what sports means to them, what does it mean to fall, what can we do when we feel like giving up, and so on. These learnings they apply to their overall life too. Well, to get a glimpse on what Sports Day is to us and how the Sports Day of the academic year 2019 - '20 went, watch this video. We would like to extend our gratitude to Ajit Sivaram for capturing this culture beautifully.

I want to be a tooth fairy! - A documentation

9/9/2020

Comments

On a gloomy Monday afternoon, the facilitators at SM were busy preparing for their classes next day when T (a 5 year old pre-schooler) walked in and sat on a facilitator's chair.
F: Do you want to be a facilitator?
T: I want to be a scientist!
F: What does it mean to be a scientist?
T: (now in thoughts and guestured to not know) What does a scientist even do?
F: But you wanted to be one?
T: Maybe I want to be a doctor or a librarian. I have not decided yet, when I become fifteen I'll get to choose.
(Something strikes her and she continues) Ah! I know! I want to explore space, I want to learn about the universe, I wish to be the first kid on space. Hmmm... What's a space ship driver called?
F: You mean an astronaut?
T: Yes! I want to be an astronaut.
T: (still thinking) Maybe I want to be a writer!
F: What would you write then?
T: When somebody goes missing, I 'll write missing on a paper and put it up so that they can find them.
T: (continued with her eyes sparkling as bright as the sun compensating for the gloom outside) maybe I'll write stories!
T: Hmmm... Maybe I'll be a zookeeper, I love animals specially dinosaurs.
F: Do we have dinosaurs in the zoos now?
T: No, they died 15 million years ago, but I'll draw them... I'll become a zookeeper!
T: (seeming confused) they are all so cool, I'm unable to decide!

By then, her Mom arrived to pick her and she leaves. as she left, she screamed out loud from the door, "Ma'am! I want to be a tooth fairy"

If we can sustain this unique and imaginative thinking through their schooling years we would have succeeded in creating individuals that will carve their own unique paths and become changemakers in their own right!

Who said learning has to ever stop even when we are quarantined?

Today we met our 5 to 6 year olds on Zoom for a year end reflection session. As discussed, they all waited for their turn to share, learned to speak by independently, talked about their favorite memories from their class. They also bid farewell and sent love and good wishes to those they will not be seeing next year as they move to Dolphins (1st grade) and mostly, they held space for each other.

They learned that learning can happen anywhere!
