Parenting As A Skill Workshop

2/12/2021

Comments

Picture

Is parenting a skill or an identity?

Most of the times parents get stuck in their ways of parenting seeing it as a fixed, unchanging identity.

Where do our models of parenting come from?
How do we look at parenting differently for each of our children (when we have more than one)?
Do solutions that worked for others work for me? There seems to be so much advice around. I'm confused.
To or not to do rewards and punishments?
What happens when my child refuses, rebels, and back answers?
What happens when they make bad choices?

With a million more thoughts and feelings a few of our parents embarked on a very different kind of workshop this season - Parenting as a Skill.

Every generation of parents and caregivers takes on the work of loving and nurturing every generation to come and the most important contribution we can make to that generation is by becoming more self-aware, empathetic, growth-oriented, and pursuing deep and meaningful connections over immediate gratification of our authority.

This weekend a few from our parent community came together with a common goal to embark on this journey willingly and joyously.

Ingredients For A Conversation Filled With Curiosities!

25/11/2021

Comments

A moment of wonder from one of our Mission Classes (SM Plates - where we discuss the mindsets with regards to food, what goes into the food that we consume, etc.),

Chirag (8 Y/O), "Is rice junk food?"
Ryan (6 Y/O) immediately responds, "They polish rice. When it is polished, it becomes like that, we can't eat it. It is not good. But if we grow it and eat, it will be healthy!"

A moment of awe, healthy exchange of information, deep thinking...marking the perfect ingredients for a conversation filled with curiosities and joy!

Let's invite more wonder in together!

Becoming Changemakers - Step 1

2/8/2021

Comments

Have you ever wondered how we can save the world from becoming a garbage pile?
Do you think there's something we can do about it? Any ideas?
If so, how can you implement them? How can these ideas produce an output?

Well...that is what project T.R.U.I is for!

WHAT IS PROJECT T.R.U.I, you ask?
As sparkling Mindzians, we were troubled to know that the waste, whether we separate or not as dry and wet waste, usually end up in the landfills and all that talk about companies recycling are usually fake. Now knowing that the waste produced in our school will end up in landfills any way, we wanted to do something about it. And that was how the concept of T.R.U.I. emerged -Tinker, Reduce, Recycle, Reuse, Up-cycle and Innovate. A project that will help us to not only T.R.U.I. our waste but also even probably sell it.

SO, WHAT DO WE PLAN TO DO ABOUT IT?
After the tool T.R.U.I. was given to us, we wanted to start the work right away, and so we did. As a class, we sat together and brought different ideas to the table. From coasters to lampshades, sound amplifiers to keychains, pencil holders to racks, our ideas were limitless. We then needed to pick a few from that big pile of ideas. To do this, we came up with a set of parameters that will give us an idea of how 'good' the idea is, what the product will and can be. The parameters we came up with were: effective, useful, abundantly sourceable, sturdy, and aesthetically pleasing. This came in handy as it helped us pick the most matched ideas from the lot.

LET'S DELVE INTO OUR DISCUSSIONS FROM T.R.U.I. EMERGED FROM
Our discussions started off with the big question, 'Where does our waste go?' We wondered about it for days and days. We enquired about it to many - our maintenance heads, the people who take the garbage and many others. Even after all that the answers were either “It goes to Bannerghatta.”, or “Why do you want to know?!” None of us were satisfied with any of the answers that we received. So many of these discussions and so many questions later, we finally arrived at T.R.U.I and the ideas started pouring in.

MISSION T.R.U.I
Now that T.R.U.I has stepped in and taken a very important role in all of our lives, we were ready to start making the items we came up with. But the facilitators helped us realize that there were more learning and skill set we needed to bring to the table to make this process easier. This created the mission T.R.U.I where all our learnings were connected to T.R.U.I., along with us learning the skills that will help us to create T.R.U.I. Ied items.

The Art of Indian Cooking | Leopards Annual Day Showcase

23/6/2021

Comments

What do you need to prepare a dish? Recipe duh, right? That's what our children thought too till they read 'The Art of Cooking'.

Why is it art? Isn't there a lot of science involved? What makes it an art? Why are these instructions so different from the recipes we are used to seeing? Really - can you really make any kind of broth if you learnt this skill? Wow!

We wondered, explored, experimented, empathized, created personas and discovered that the problem was to learn the skills in cooking that could lead to unlocking the treasure trove of recipes and the ability to work with a plethora of ingredients. Voila! We had magic in our hands.

Children spent time interviewing, designing and curating the skills that could help different kinds of people discover their inner cooking persona as well as learn and upskill themselves to become better cooks.

This year for the Annual Day, our Leopards (4th and 5th graders) explored 'The Art of Indian Cooking' from first principles and designed something that each of us can use and work with. Along they way they had some magical moments of bonding with their families, embracing the inner scientist in them while some of them brought out their inner chefs. And well, what got cooked? Find out for yourself by watching the video!

But before that, let's let Ms. Poorva Agarwal take us through the cooking of this whole process.

And here, the final product!

Here we have our wonderful parents reflecting along with us, and sharing with us their sides of the story as well. Have a look!

Case Study: Developing Emotional Intelligence

12/6/2021

Comments

Children learn to respond to situations better when their emotional intelligence is developed. The first step is to develop self awareness and awareness of emotions in others and Esha has demonstrated that very well in this case. Here is a short case study of transformative learning from our Afterschool Program on how a child who developed Emotional Intelligence transferred her learning to the home environment.

Raising Confident Learners!

4/2/2021

Comments

Inspiring Confident Learners
We at Sparkling Mindz handle children's issues in different ways. One way is to model their behavior back to them, asking them to reflect, take perspective and empathize on how/what they are doing or how others feel as a result of their behavior.

Another way is through role plays and this time, the facilitators at preschool decided to role play as children. They chose three scenarios to role play:
a) taking every communication with peers as an attack and being rude in response to attack,
b) self victimizing by saying they have no friends, and
c) wanting to look like the others and not satisfied with how they already look (especially the skin color).

Each scenario explains what the facilitators role played and what children reflected after each of the scenes.

Scenario 1

Friend 1 makes fun of friend 2's drawing that leads friend 2 to be upset and get into a mode of rejecting the other's friendship and her opinion by telling herself things that are not productive.

Reflections

An, "The house can be drawn however we want it to be."
Em, "We should not be rude at other's work."
An, "Friend 1 did not care about what the other child said."
An, "Yes, she cared only about herself."
Sh, "She was hurt!"
Aad "Friend 2 was upset and was telling herself that she wants to be on her own."
Anya " Yes, she kept telling bad things to herself like, I don't like other people and they are rude to me!"

At this point the facilitator asked them, "Did friend 2 telling herself bad things help her?"

All, "Nooo!!!"

Facilitator (F), "What could she tell herself instead?"

Various responses such as, "I like mine, but I don't know why she did not like mine...", "I like mine but maybe she likes the way she draws...", "We should like what others do...", etc., came out.

F, "Are we expecting others to tell good things about us?"
An, without a blink, "Yes!"

F, "Is it ok when somebody doesn't like what we do?"
An, "It's okay I'll like it anyway."
F, "Okay. You can also tell them politely , "I like the way I have painted.""
F2, "So what did we learn from this?"
An, "To be kind to others and ourselves."

And the facilitator added, "Saying good things to ourselves and what we choose to do is not for other people's approval."

Scenario 2

Facilitators role played 2 kids playing and talking about their interests. Another child who wanted to join them did not want to join them as he did not get invited, and how the child 3 feels sad.

Reflections

An, "We have to play with everyone and we can't leave others."
Av, "Do not play with only one best friend but others too."
F , "Why?"
An, "If we get used to only one friend and when that friend is not there we will have no one!"
, "What do you think child 3 should have done?"
Ang "The child 3 should have asked them can I join you"
Sh " Ask yourself what else can you do and do that"
Em, "Play with myself"

Scenario 3

Facilitators enacted a scene where they were comparing and complaining about their skin tone and not liking the way they look.

Reflections

F, "Why do you think we are telling ourselves this?"
Sh, "Because we don't like ourselves."
F, "Hmmm. Has anybody felt this way?"

A couple of hands went up.

F, "What did you do when you felt that way?"

There was no answer at this point.

After a couple of questions,
An, "If you were dark you would want to be fair, you will always want to be like someone else!"
Ad,  "It doesn't matter what color we are."
Aa added to spark some creative thinking and humour, "Only chameleons change color..."
Ash, "If we become someone else then we cannot get back our own color!"
Ad shared how he felt bad one morning when his peers made fun of his color.
Sh after some thought, "If we are different that's what makes us special!"

Meh, "Our parents love us no matter what!"

The last scenario's discussion will be taken forward in their own individual classes as most of the children seemed to relate and did not know what to answer. This will need more time and hence children wound up for the day after this, as it was the last hour for the day. It is important to address situations like this as they start off itself so that children are equipped to handle themselves, and others if needed. They become empowered citizens who can think for themselves, empathize and grow with growth mindset. And they learn to accept themselves for who they are instead of seeking constant approval from others.

Let's raise a generation of confident learners!

Sphinx's Poetic Soiree

PART 4/4

"Poetry is when an emotion has found its thought and the thought has found words." - Robert Frost.'

We have all read/ learned/ wrote poems as kids, in our teens...a lot of which followed well into our adulthood. Poetry to some is an inflow/ outflow of expressionism while to some it is an appreciation of art. Well, you get the idea.

Our children, at SM, found themselves living, breathing, consuming poems and the process of poetry, creating their own, channelling the ones they connected with; pretty sure that this inspiration and love will be life-long. And during our annual Poetic Soiree event, they came together in their houses (Griffins, Pegasus, Phoenix, Sphinx) to express themselves through poems. As our pandemic motto, 'No-Virus Can Stop Our Learning!', they marched through with might and grit, fun and laughter, love and play, and a little bit of 'Learning Never Stops!'. So here they are, showcasing their poems to you.
