Does Bengaluru Meet a Child's Needs?
|
Bengaluru’s relationship with water has shaped the city’s past and will shape its future. At our school, we believe the story of water is also a story of responsibility, one we are proud to be part of.
Being learners and changemakers is central to who we are. To understand our city, we went on two sets of walks, one in our local spaces around the school and key spaces deeper into the city. These walks helped us explore how safe Bengaluru’s ecosystems are, whether they meet our needs as children, and what those needs are. On the local walks, we noticed everyday patterns, streets, drains, lakes, and how water is used or wasted. The city walks showed us Bengaluru’s bigger story, from once-thriving lakes to the challenges of pollution, waste, and water crisis that we face today. Many of us have described Bengaluru as the “garbage city” or even the “shitty city.” These words reflect frustration and sadness, but for us, belonging to Bengaluru also means choosing to change that story and act on it. |
What do children need from a city?
Here is the data we gathered at our school, highlighting what children need from ecosystems in today’s times.
To explore the city and belong with it more deeply, we went on walks to the school, local neighborhoods, and the city, reflecting on how each space “sees” them. These walks revealed that while adults often assume we need technology or structured learning, we ourselves emphasized on the importance of feeling safe, connected, and valued. Seeing the city through their eyes reminded us that urban spaces must nurture not just future citizens, but childhood itself.
Thus, began Child in the City Walks...

Bangalore Floods When It Rains
To grasp the challenges Bengaluru faces, we interviewed experts and officials in water management, architecture, and infrastructure, including ‘The Rainman of Bengaluru,’ Dr. Yellapa Reddy, a hydrologist, and many others. These conversations helped us see the problems clearly, understand their impact, and imagine how we, as children and changemakers, can be part of the solution. INTERVIEWS COMING OUT SOON! |
