Child in the City Heritage Walks
Explore. Connect. Belong.
Why Does It Matter?
Children in the city today often lack a sense of connection and belonging to their own home. This disconnect fosters apathy and indifference toward the problems they see around them. They have little understanding of the city’s journey or its rich history, making it difficult to see beyond the pollution, traffic and pot-holed roads brought by unplanned urbanization.
Without an awareness of what the city has endured, they struggle to empathize with its past and present challenges. This disconnection prevents them from developing a sense of responsibility or a desire to take action. Without a connection to the city's past, how can they be inspired to care about its future?
When the children of the city stay in apathy, then it's easy to make convenience driven choices that are actually not considerate of the ecosystem or the city itself. Is that the future we want to walk towards?
Our school is situated in Bengaluru, and we saw a similar narrative in the children in our school. Children of our city - Namma Bengaluru. Bengaluru is known for being a tech hub, a city of immigrants, the “Silicon Valley of the East”...but was it ever more than that?
We were shocked to know our city’s stories - stories of an advanced lake network, stories of the Bengaluru Hills being geologically billions of years old, and stories of the thriving cultural heritage that our city continues to hold. How can more people see this side of Bengaluru?
