Children responded with heart and soul. Their answers were raw and honest - "Shitty city", "Too much pollution," "Garbage everywhere," "Potholes."
This led us to take them on a walk into the city. We stepped out of classrooms and into the city on 'Child in the City Walks.'
They observed, they wondered.
They came back full of curiosity, questions, and observations.
Each question found its way into a learning area (subjects) space - Scientific Inquiry and Experimentation, Math Problem Solving and Design, Citizenship World and Entrepreneurship and English Language Arts and Communication. Through various connections built across towards each Learning Area, they used the different skills they have been learning. They researched, measured, mapped, debated, and analysed.
And slowly, one truth became impossible to ignore : Bangalore is heading towards a water crisis. That questions grew deeper - Was Bangalore always like this? How did we reach here?
In this process, they met the lake rejuvenation workers, Hydrologists, Environmentalists, Urban planners, and Citizens safeguarding lakes. Then came the shockimg revelation - Bangalore once had over 1000 lakes. Today, only 81 remain!
Their learning demanded expression, not as a presentation but as a story the city needed to hear, a story that citizens had to hear. With guidance from mentors, they put together a dance-drama performance,“Bangalore – A City of 1000 Lakes." The History, Science, Data and Emotions are all woven into one powerful narrative.
When we shared it with our 200 parent families, the next question emerged - “Is this enough?”
It wasn’t.
A few of them boldly approached the Metro authorities. Got permission. And took their message to the heart of the city. Till date, they have performed 75+ shows across the Bangalore Metro stations.
This year, they asked for one more step of courage “Can we take this into our communities?”
Our parents echoed a yes. They opened the gates and stood beside their children as allies. For them, this is not just a performance; they are learning that their voice matters. They are learning that research can move streets, learning can reshape cities.
That change making is not someday, it is now. To every parent who believed, to every child who dared, to every space that opened its doors - thank you for walking this journey with us.
The lake still needs saving. And the children are not done yet.
If you are open to joining hands with these changemakers, invite us to your community, your school, your apartment.
