When we asked our children a “What do you need as a child?”
Many answers emerged across age groups. But one need stood out strongly:Belonging.
We then asked them, “What is your image of the city you live in?”
Their responses were honest. Raw and Real - “Shitty city, Pollution, Garbage,Traffic.”
Instead of correcting them, we chose to explore with them. We stepped out into the city.
They observed, they wondered and they returned with curiosity.
Those questions travelled back into their learning spaces -
In science, they explored pollution and ecosystems.
In social studies, they examined systems and civic responsibility.
In math, they looked at data and patterns.
In languages, they learned to put these down into different forms of written expressions.
Through masterclasses with facilitators, their curiosity deepened. Layers of understanding unfolded.
Learning was no longer abstract. It had purpose and something shifted and their connection to the city began to grow.
They started asking deeper questions: What is our role in the pollution we see? How do we contribute to garbage? What is our part in traffic and chaos? What can we do about it?
This is how confident learners are shaped. This is how changemakers begin. Not by giving them answers but by helping them care enough to ask better questions.
