We ran a 12K Marathon!

8/10/2020

Comments

Last October, on the 2nd (on the 150th anniversary of Gandhiji's birthday), our children ran a solid 12KM marathon, beating their previous year's record of 6.6KM.

What's special about this? Well, they wanted to dedicate their run to the physical and mental health of children all over the world as a run, or any sport, is much more than just a physical workout/ a challenge. It is "I can do this!", and "Let's keep going, you can do this!", and a whole lot of "I am not giving up."

One of our Falcons shared her experience on the the whole process on where they started with this run and where they reached in that journey, which can be read here.

A run is never just a run. It's so much more than that; it is physical, mental, emotional...and holistic. At SM, sports is an experience, a celebration, and we are all about pushing limits and growing from our comfort zones, watch ourselves become more resilient, set more goals for ourselves through the trainings and workouts, learn to work in different teams thereby, going beyond our familiar spaces, learning to focus more on the whole experience...And oh, there is more! We build muscles of growth mindset and go beyond our limitations and beliefs we that have set for ourselves too! And yes, this is sports for us, SMzians! Hence, a run is never just a run for us.

How about you, have you ever ran a marathon? What was your experience? Share in the comments below.

It's our Sports Day!

5/10/2020

Comments

"Hurray! It's our Sports Day!", screamed the children and facilitators alike. To us at SM, sports day is a celebration.

Celebrate what, you may ask? Well, we want to celebrate our growth, our togetherness, our hard work with respect to the trainings, learnings, pushing ourselves beyond our usual 'workout' days.

And this year, the preschoolers of SM were introduced to a new team game. They took it with open arms, learning about what it's like to work with a team, be part of a team, resilience, focus, etc. They learned so much in the field…what more? They learned to take all this learning back to their classes too.

Sports is not a goal or the finish line for us at SM, but an integral part of the classroom too, and this begins with our wide and deep disconnections on what sports means to them, what does it mean to fall, what can we do when we feel like giving up, and so on. These learnings they apply to their overall life too. Well, to get a glimpse on what Sports Day is to us and how the Sports Day of the academic year 2019 - '20 went, watch this video. We would like to extend our gratitude to Ajit Sivaram for capturing this culture beautifully.

The word 'education' arouses a lot of emotions and feelings within all of us. To some, it is 'bookish' knowledge while to some, it is broadening the walls of their mind. To some, it is going beyond the industrial life, learning to respect each other and changing lives.

How about you? What do you think of when you hear this word - education? To us, at Sparkling Mindz Global, education is nothing but inspiring confident learners. And last year, Sparkling Mindz Global was awarded Top 50 Educational Organizations by GFEL in 2019 for an innovative approach to learning and empowering children.

And that's exactly what we do here, inspire and empower, to prepare our children for the future, to raise a generation of confident leaders. Get to know us a little through this video of our CEO, Sreeja Iyer, where she touches upon what it is that we do at SM.

What is the kind of school you would like your child to go to?

'Submerged' in Science!

25/9/2020

Comments

On a bright sunny day, the Falcons (11, 12 and 13 year olds) and 2 facilitators headed out on an explore mission to a science exhibition called Submerge. An explore mission is one where a group of students experience either an activity, experiment or so, and generate unlimited wonder questions. That day’s mission was part of a unique learning game in the learning area called SIE (Scientific Inquiry and Experimentation) and these set of students have been playing the game for about a year now.

Excited and curious, this bunch of children got into their school bus with sheets for them to write their observations and questions on, based on the exhibition. While on the bus, one of our students called the school bus a ‘Guardians of Science mobile!’ Upon hearing this, another immediately added, “We could travel around learning about science and have our own exhibit everywhere we go!” While on their way, they pondered on and discussed questions, such as ‘Where are we going ? What is being showcased ? Who is doing this?’ and many many more.

Upon reaching there, we split ourselves into groups to explore multiple exhibits at once. Once we stepped in, we were all constantly left to wonder. Hanging by a wall were 4 metal plates that seemed to make some kind of sound. The mediator asked us what we thought about what it was, what could be a possible reason for the creator to have made this… At this time, S used his detective observation skills to answer we unlocked more and more of the story of gold mines in Colorado and how a river is polluted by Aluminium, Steel, Copper and Lead. And on one side, M was thoroughly amazed as that was the first time M had seen art, science, storytelling and technology put together to create something so amazing!

Some of the other exhibits that were showcased were- a plant called Argus that can detect lead in the soil, an electrolysis equipment that helped us hear the sound of various lakes in Bangalore and so much more. The guardians of science stopped at nothing! They were on a mission- constantly asking and writing questions that would help them set off on a journey to make connections and learn Chemistry deeper. Our questions spread wider as we saw data systems that measured climate and brine shrimp that lay dormant. Amazed, M commented, “ They put science, so many other areas like art, music, social change, farming and all of them together. Can our experiments be this cool?”. As we covered more of the exhibition, we saw more that showcased the combined ability for engineering and science to create an impact, a water fountain made from puddles and a vertical garden of a certain kind of weed that some villages in Bangalore (Karnataka) cook and eat.

With eyes wide open and still remembering, wondering and questioning everything that we saw, we finally sat down to eat and reflect. Post our reflection on what we saw and what we learned, we headed back to school. Some of us shared about how there is so much purpose around us and how it is just a grasp away, that we should just go and find it. Facilitator S mentioned how our careers in the future are going to cross functional and that we will most likely be working on creating impact using knowledge and skills from various areas, merging everything, just like how the exhibition merged science, art, storytelling and technology! And finally, through this experience we fuelled our curiosity, collected unlimited wonder questions, connected to the world of science and explored Chemistry.

Sports Day - a poem by our 4 year olds!

21/9/2020

Comments

It is just before the discussions on the upcoming Sports Day, children are all excited and getting geared up for their drill practises. The 4 year olds are all talking about sports, what all new sports they want to learn, showing off their cartwheeling skills...when they were asked the question by the facilitator, "How about we write a poem about our Sports Day?"

(Children were all speaking to each other in poems since their stage performances during the Poetic Soiree evening. So poetry seemed rather appropriate here to reinforce the things we had learned and believed about ourselves with regards to sports. Plus, we can always recite it wherever we go, and to give ourselves a little boost!)

"YESSSS!!!", came in an uproar of excitement unanimously.

"Awesome! What do you want the title to be?"
"Sports Day!", came the reply, once again, almost unanimously. The below is the poem they created together with a little help of the facilitator,

Just what does it mean to be brave?

14/9/2020

Comments

What does being brave mean
Bravery – a word often used to describe something heroic; saving a life, sacrificing for someone else, catching a wild animal…

What comes to your mind when you hear this word for the first time?

Let me tell you mine: I see myself jumping off a cliff into the ocean (although I can barely swim). I see people riding vehicles through a busy road, exploring a non-treaded path...list is endless.

‘So is bravery all about doing daredevil things?’ We asked ourselves when we were reflecting over lunch today about what it really means to be brave. This topic of conversation came up in between us while contemplating about a recent incident where one of us had to choose between continuing to ride through a busy street, passing through a narrow passage between a lorry or wait until the lorry has passed, for the sake of safety of others who were riding with her. And it got us thinking…

If personified and empathized with the word ‘bravery’, one can probably feel how misunderstood and left-out the word truly feels, as it is often left to stand in the shoes of outwardly humongous achievements by others. So then what about the little actions and decisions made, like choosing to be a mother? Or confronting somebody when all you want to do is run away at the mere thought of standing up for yourself? Or even choosing to answer a phone call when you experience anxiety every time you talk on the phone?

And that took a turn when we went deeper on the topic with ‘what about the times when bravery to somebody is all about being brave to prove to others and yourself of your capabilities? Where does this intention come from, what drives this behavior of wanting to do things for the sake of some kind of approval?’ This led us to ponder over another thought about being brave - doing things for the sake of pure pleasure, avoiding the consequences.

Examples kept piling up between us when we were struck with another question, ‘How about being brave responsibly?’ What does it mean to be responsibly brave? Is taking care of yourself when you live all by yourself responsibly brave? How about facing the crowd and presenting a poem? That left me with another question, ‘Does being responsibly brave come with growth?’ I think the answer is, perhaps?

Some of the examples received from two of my other colleagues who happened to pass by while we were reflecting were words such as,
-          Having a sense of purpose
-          Confidence
-          Soldiers
-          Animals and reptiles such as snakes and tigers
-          David Goliath
-          Good over evil
-          Me
-          Facing the fears
-          Moving out of comfort zones
-          Staying true to who you are
-          Upholding your values
-          Smiling in the face of strife/adversities
-          Willingness to change

This would mean, we are all brave, doesn’t it? Sometimes we are too hard on ourselves, that we often don’t tend to see the truth behind our lenses of harsh self-criticism. But I think the truth is, we are all perhaps, brave, taking bold decisions, living our lives to fulfill whatever purposes we give our lives. And maybe, being brave is also a form of self-love? I leave you to that.

Can you lift ice without touching it?- a Covid-19 challenge!

12/9/2020

Comments

Times have been unpredictable, with the COVID-19 spreading, driving the world to take refuge in a dark shell of uncertainty. First, the schools were shut, then we were to keep our distance from each other and then, a complete lock down extending for over a month. Does this mean we shut everything down? Should children's learning stop? How are parents going to keep them engaged? These are some of the questions we asked ourselves.

We, at Sparkling Mindz value and nurture growth mindset. We believe that there is always a way, even in the face of adversities. We took to technology and reconnected with our children over video calls. Our children too vibed with our mindset, that NO Virus Can Stop Our LEARNING!

We have been connecting with our children ranging from 7year Olds to 14 year Olds, reiterating to them about the importance of managing themselves mentally, emotionally and physically, and being able to create a routine that involves productive engagement. Oh! trust me, our children can create amazing schedules for themselves.

On the last video call with our youngest group of children (the 7 to 8 year Olds), we presented a variety of activities that they could add to their schedules, which included different kinds of chores, workouts, experiments, skill building activities etc. Our children were  more than delighted to accept the repertoire of  options to choose from.

Here, we have V trying to pick ice cubes with a piece of string as part of his play and learn experiment. The joy on his face shows us his engagement and wonder. Knowing V, we can imagine the curious wonder questions and observations he must have made while he experimented.

Here is our Advika, doing the same challenge, inspiring all of us in the process, in her own creative way!
We viewed this adversity not as a hindrance but rather as an opportunity that presented itself to help our children and us learn and grow through it.

Children, need to be encouraged to deal with adversities with a growth mindset. Why? So they become individuals who can deal with their circumstances without giving up on themselves or their dreams.

Visualizing a Perfect Evening

1/9/2020

Comments

In yet another 10 year old child's case: his prompt was "a perfect evening". Sharing his visualization.

"I've been struggling to watch a particular angle of the moon for several days, got a picture uploaded it onto a forum that I've been following. I won a cash prize of $1000! Yayyyy!

When I told my dad in the evening, Dad and I decided to go for a celebratory walk (mom not joining...yay!!!). I saw a t-shirt at discount and bought it! Day was made!"

Facilitator: What was the perfect part S?
S: Of course, the cash prize and the new T-shirt! Duh!!!
F: In your visualization.

S is looking at external and materialistic things as making up a perfect evening and not seeing the satisfaction in his own effort of getting the snap of the moon or his evening spent in his dad's company.

Visualization

In our overly materialistic world children struggle to see the value of effort and connection, and focus on winning and results instead. This fixation of results as a form of validation vs. the process and the connection gets children stuck with a form of fixed mindset where they find it hard to deal with failure and eventually don't pursue learning as a journey anymore.

The tool, visualization, helps children open up and share which reveals their current status with respect to locus of control and process vs. result orientation. It's through awareness and open communication that we can reach out and help children see the beauty of their own effort and human connection that is hidden right under their noses.

As we embark on the journey to impact more lives through our Young Achievers Academy we invite applications from the ones who are interested to create deep, meaningful impact in children.

The TRUI Magician I Never Knew I Was!

25/8/2020

Comments

Being a changemaker

For a very long time I only thought the world was doomed (in an environmental way, and maybe some other ways) but I only voiced it out I never really took much action. That was until I was able to be involved in a journey that I’d always wanted to be part of.  Here’s the journey…

HOW IT STARTED?
At Sparkling Mindz we aim to change the world, to be changemakers and what I soon learnt was we can’t wait for the opportunity of change to be given to us. No! We had to grab it.
With the help of our facilitators grab we did. Our mission this time was about looking at our world, the one we live in, and turn it into the best world it can be. To bring it back to the once  sustainable, original and “green” form. We tried empathising with the land in which we live in and we figured out if kept at the rate at which we were going (which is carelessness of our natural resources and abundance of harmful litter) we weren’t going to go far. So that’s how we started TRUI.

OK, WHAT’S TRUI?
Tinker, 2Rs (reduce, reuse, recycle), Upcycle and Innovate. TRUI, simple, right? Wrong.

TRUI was a mission that needed blueprints, stepping into it just like that wouldn’t necessarily be an ideal plan. The process involved using waste materials and turning it into something useful, TRUI made You the magician. It was one of the centres of our learning this year, making all out learning areas revolve around it. How? Well, taking a pieces of junk and recreating which connects to so much that we have learnt in our learning areas (in other words, all the subjects we learn).  And it reflected in our output.

OUR ACCOMPLISHMENTS
So as said before our learning areas really helped in the ideation process of using TRUI. And here’s our  output. We were able to come up with  a set of ideas which involved making coasters, wind chimes, lamp shades and dust bins. Each learning area helped us in the process of getting here. We’ve already started attempting these and so far it has been fun and we still have so much more to do.

MY LEARNING
Through out this journey I have learnt many things, some I may have known and actually played out and some I found out on the way. There were many learnings that played a role in my learning areas and yet so many that I know I will use in the future for my academics. So other than learning how I can be an innovator, I learnt how being a part of a change that is going to impact the lives of so may people just makes me a better person along the way.

So there it is, a short yet fairly detailed glimpse of our TRUI journey and from the beginning till now I felt like magician, except that I knew the magic that was released was real.

Our Joeys wish you a very Happy Independence Day!

15/8/2020

Comments

"Happy Independence day!!", screamed the Joeys, our 5 to 6 year olds, as they excitedly held up their flags on the screen right after they made the flags.

They have been going deeper into their identity as Indians, discovering their root and passion for their country by learning about their country's freedom struggle, the freedom fighters, the national symbols, and what they truly stand for. Not just one side of the story though, they have been delving deeper through empathy to see the other side of the story too! Here are some of their interpretations of what Independence Day means to them.
